Sclerotherapy is the most effective vein therapy for spider veins on the legs. In cases where the varicose veins swell and bulge, they can weaken the walls of the veins. This, in turn, weakens the valves of the veins, resulting in blood pooling, swelling, and increasing the risk of blood clots. At Westford Dermatology, we offer sclerotherapy treatment in Boston for patients who are bothered by the appearance of their spider veins or who are experiencing pain or discomfort as a result of their spider veins.
What Are Spider Veins And Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged veins and are most prominently visible on the legs. This happens as pressure on the veins is increased as a result of activities like walking or running. Varicose veins occur when valves are weakened or damaged. When the valves are weakened, blood that is supposed to be moved towards the heart through the valves can instead move backwards into the vein. This creates damage as the veins can be stretched or become twisted.
Although varicose veins aren’t always painful, they can cause pain and discomfort in some cases.
What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure that is the “gold standard” for treating the veins of the legs and is preferred over laser. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a medical solution into the small surface veins so that they slowly disappear. This irritant solution is termed a ‘sclerosant’. When injected into the affected area, it ‘irritates’ the blood and lymph vessels. This causes the flow of lymphatic or blood vessels to the area to be shut down and rerouted down healthier pathways. Meanwhile, the vessels in the affected area start to shrink and collapse. Then they are eventually reabsorbed by the body.
Preparing for Your Sclerotherapy
During your consultation, you will find out if sclerotherapy is the right procedure for your veins. Your doctor will perform a physical examination of the affected area. They may also ask you if you’re experiencing any pain in the varicose veins. An ultrasound may also be recommended to ensure that there are no blood clots.
The doctor may physically compress the area, in an effort to ensure that blood or lymphatic fluids don’t re-enter the location. Anesthesia is not required for the procedure.
Sclerotherapy Recovery and Results
It is common to need two treatment sessions separated by several weeks. After the procedure, you will have to wear compression stockings around the affected area to maintain pressure for around two weeks. While you can resume most normal activities the same day, it’s better to take it easier on your legs until the recovery process is over. You can see the results appear within three to six weeks after the procedure. Details of the procedure will be discussed as well as the recovery time. Dr. Franks will provide you with some post-procedure instructions following your sclerotherapy in Boston to help you throughout the recovery process.
